My perfect Saturday includes waking up early to be the first one pulling into the Farmer’s Market. I leisurely fill my reusable grocery tote with locally grown, fresh fruit and veggies under the morning sun. Maybe I grab green juice while there, indulge in mini donuts—living the Millennial’s Zen and Balanced Lifestyle dream.
The problem is that most weekend markets open too early after a long week of work, plus Friday happy hour (and usually happier hour).
The real version of my Saturdays is a lot less picturesque: me napping all morning. When I finally peel myself off my couch, I head out to battle the early-afternoon rush of weekend warriors desperate to stock their fridges with fresh greens for the week. The cream of the crop has already been picked, and the sun is so hot I would rather be tanning with a drink in hand than carting around my heavy reusable bag.
Note: the bag is usually filled with treats like personal sized cheesecakes and ready-made gourmet mashed potatoes instead of produce as planned. Still tasty, but a little unhealthy.
Luckily, for people like me, Stephen Avenue is hosting a bi-weekly, Tuesday Farmer’s Market again this year. Urban jungle meets fresh produce. I can’t think of a better way to make use of the Core’s pedestrian-only zone on a regular basis.
The best part? This market doesn’t open until 11am. It’s like these vendors know that we are busy. If you’re working downtown on a Tuesday, go on your lunch break. If it’s your day off, you can sleep in and mosey on down as you please. This urban market is literally the solution to our weekend problems. It means I can dedicate Saturdays to guilt-free napping.
Aside from fresh produce, vendors include spices and sauces, pre-made treats and meals, as well as fashion and artisanal items. The vendors vary based on availability.
Up to 60 vendors set up shop covering three blocks of Stephen Avenue: from 1st Street East to 2nd Street West. The urban market is open select Tuesdays from 11am to 5pm from now until September 5. Happy shopping!
